The Tamil Nadu government has made registration of marriages compulsory, warning of action if it was not done within the stipulated period or if false information was provided.
The Registration Department, by a Government Order dated November 24, has made compulsory the registration of marriages of persons belonging to various religions in the State under the Tamil Nadu Marriages Registration Rules 2009.
The event, even if registered under different Acts governing the Hindu, Christian and Muslim marriages, “are required to be compulsorily registered,” an official press release said.
The persons concerned should send a memorandum along with duly filled forms, witnesses’ signature besides that of the priest who solemnised the marriage and proof of age and identity to Registrar of Marriage within 90 days, the release said adding false information or non-registration of marriages will attract punishment.
“All marriages, irrespective of religion or caste, if not registered within the prescribed time or any person who makes any statement which is false in material or particulars or contravenes any provisions of this Act, on conviction, will be punished,” it said. The Hindu

ReplyDeleteHi Auxilia, How different will this work for ppl getting married in our churches. I know that previously the church used to send details of the marrying couple to the registrar's office. Does it still work the same way or will the couple have to go to the registrar office directly.
