GUIDELINES TO REGISTER MARRIAGES

The Parties to the marriage, the Priest who performed the marriage and the witnesses, should sign and file a memorandum before the Sub-registrar, along with the following documents:-

(a) (i) Copy of the voter’s Identity Card issued by the Election Commission of India, or

(ii) Copy of Passport; or

(iii) Copy of PAN/GIR card issued by the Income Tax Department; or

(iv) Copy of Ration Card; or

(v) Copy of Photo Identity Card issued by the Government; or Government Undertaking or Local bodies; or

(vi) Copy of Pass Book issued by Banks or Post Offices (With Photo); or

(vii) Copy of Pension book; or

(viii) Copy of certificate issued to handicapped persons; or

(ix) Copy of Gun license; or

(x) Copy of identity card issued to “Freedom fighters”.

(b) (i) Copy of birth certificate; or

(ii) School/College leaving certificate; or

(iii) any other proof of age of parties to the marriage; and

(c) Marriage invitation card or any other proof of place of ‘Marriage’.

The memorandum and the documents should be submitted before marriage registrar, alongwith fees of Rs. 100/-, if it is within 90 days of marriage.

If marriage is not registered within 90 days, within 150 days from date of marriage, registration should be made , and a fee of Rs. 150/- should be paid.

TAMIL NADU GOVERNMENT MAKES REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGES COMPULSORY

The Tamil Nadu government has made registration of marriages compulsory, warning of action if it was not done within the stipulated period or if false information was provided.
The Registration Department, by a Government Order dated November 24, has made compulsory the registration of marriages of persons belonging to various religions in the State under the Tamil Nadu Marriages Registration Rules 2009.
The event, even if registered under different Acts governing the Hindu, Christian and Muslim marriages, “are required to be compulsorily registered,” an official press release said.
The persons concerned should send a memorandum along with duly filled forms, witnesses’ signature besides that of the priest who solemnised the marriage and proof of age and identity to Registrar of Marriage within 90 days, the release said adding false information or non-registration of marriages will attract punishment.
“All marriages, irrespective of religion or caste, if not registered within the prescribed time or any person who makes any statement which is false in material or particulars or contravenes any provisions of this Act, on conviction, will be punished,” it said. The Hindu
